Do It for the Kids

Updated: Jun 8, 2022

I once heard a young girl I barely knew say "I don't want to go back home. Grandpa lives with us now and he gets mean when he's drunk. And that's EVERY night!"

What about the toddler who just doesn't understand why Dad and Mom stumble or slur their words sometimes, or, worse yet just pass out?

The statistics are in: 1 in 4 children lives with a parent with an alcohol dependency. Many suffer from emotional and behavioral problems as well as face an increased risk of having a drinking problem themselves.

Alcohol abuse takes an especially high toll on children, who often carry the scars associated with a parent’s excessive drinking well into adulthood.

But it's not as simple as "Conquer your addictions (alcohol, drugs, food, sex, or whatever) for the sake of the kids!" The abuser oftentimes does not recognize that they have a problem. And many times the reaction you get when you try to bring up the topic is not good. You run the risks of anger, isolation, or total rejection. So what do I do when I fear for the health and safety of my friends and loved ones? There's no "one size fits all" method or approach. I'm providing some resource links which might help you tailor the plan that works for you.
