Quick Tips for a Clean House All Week Long

Updated: May 27, 2022

If you’ve ever woken up to a messy house, you know how it can impact your mental health which is no way to start the day. But you’re a busy, working adult, and you don’t have time to deep clean each weekend. Your options are to hire a housekeeping service or keep your house “company” clean every day. Fortunately, you don’t have to outsource cleaning if you follow these tips. Ruth for the Broken shares a few tips on how to keep your home tidy every day.

Keep a washing schedule.

Overwhelmed with laundry? You may be washing too often. According to Whirlpool, jeans only need to be washed every four to five times you wear them. Casual jackets and sweaters can follow the same schedule. Following these rules, you can feasibly cut out at least one or two loads of laundry each week. For those pieces that you must clean, plan one day each week, ideally on the weekend, to wash, dry, and put up your clothes. The same rule of thumb should apply to everyone in your household old enough to handle their own laundry.

You also want to make sure that you wash your bed linens regularly as well. The general rule of thumb is once every two weeks. However, Healthline asserts that if you sweat at night, have pets in the bed, or tend to sleep in the buff, you want to change that to once each week. A quick tip: Have at least two sets of sheets for every bed so that you can immediately make it once it’s been stripped. This will save you the frustration of walking into the bedroom at 10 PM, only to realize that you haven’t put your sheets in the dryer.

Fix what’s broken.

From the coffee maker to the microwave, we tend to overlook our small appliances. But these make our lives more convenient and using them gives us more time to tackle other tasks. Take an inventory of your kitchen and fix or replace broken appliances.

Spend some time evaluating the rest of your home. Look for issues that can make your home appear messier than it actually is. Crumpled or loose carpet is one example. Family Handyman claims that you can tackle this yourself with a few simple tools in a single afternoon.

Loose deck boards, missing numbers on the mailbox, and stained upholstery are all other simple and quick fixes that can make your home appear more put together. If your couch or chair has a stain that can’t be removed, visit Angi.com to find the best upholstery cleaning company in your area. Make sure to check the warranty on your furniture piece—there’s a chance it may cover the cost of cleaning.

Daily To-Dos

10 minutes each day will help you keep a clean house. Here are a few things you can do in this amount of time or less:

  • Clean the windows in one room

  • Start a load of dishes

  • Wipe down the kitchen counters

  • Organize one drawer

  • Fold the blankets in the living room

  • Vacuum (don’t forget to clean the vacuum inside and out when it’s filled!)

Additionally, you’ll want to make sure that you have all of the right cleaning supplies on hand. Disinfectants, dish soap, magic erasers, and lots of clean washcloths will go a long way. Keep a cleaning supply caddy in the kitchen and the bathroom, and you won’t have an excuse not to wipe things down.

A dirty and disorganized home can leave you stressed out and mentally and physically exhausted. But the good news is that you don’t have to spend an hour each day keeping a clean home. A few small preemptive actions, like fixing broken appliances and making the bed, will help you live in a clutter and chaos-free environment.
