What Are Some of the Causes of Mental Disorders?

Many factors can contribute to mental illness, including biological (genes, chemical imbalances in the brain), negative experiences (life situations, trauma, abuse), chronic illnesses, alcohol or recreational drug use, loneliness, or isolation. In later posts I will discuss a few of the contributing factors to some of my previous mental illness problems.
The Treatment Advocacy Center points out that anosognosia is the "single largest reason why people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder refuse medications or do not seek treatment. Without awareness of the illness, refusing treatment appears rational, no matter how clear the need for treatment might be to others."
